This makes FIOS look like crap. This is actually pretty exciting, looks like the evolution of the internet to me.

Almost makes up for how Cern's Large Hadron Collider is going to generate a rapidly growing micro black hole that will tear through the earth or consume it entirely.

So when this comes out, we'll actually have that kind of service here in Utica in a few hundred years! lol....

Seriously though, that does look kind of cool. Seems like they're finally deciding to just go fiber optic with everything. I don't think this is anything new, as far as the technology, just it must have become cheap enough for a lot of people to do what the big internet carriers have already been doing. It's kind of like a world-wide upgrade or something.

So I'm hoping this will somehow spawn the need for optical CPUs. Those will be crazy. Like, mine has 2 cores or whatever, but different rays of light don't interfere with eachother. You can essentially have 100s of cores in one chip. Hardly any heat to dissipate too Wink.

And all of these machines will run Windows XP because microsoft will still be in development of a worthy successor to XP.

Well, yes and no, this isn't the "internet" this is a completely new thing, completely seperate from the internet that is 100% fiber, optic, cables, routers, everything. this is basically a "new" internet.

This technology is probably a decade away from being widely available, but it's still pretty exciting to see what could be the next step.

As far as the XP comment pookie made, Gates has said that Windows 7 could be out sometime next year,

Honestly, I'm thinking whoever develops the optical chips first is going to have the presence of mind to write their own OS to go with it. It makes a lot of sense to me. I mean, they may contract it out and work with another company, but it seems like they would do something like that. The groundwork for it is going to be so much different than what we're running now, it'll have to be straight up rebuilt from scratch. Microsoft will probably come out with something, but I could see a serious rival emerging. Breaking the MS monopoly.

As far as Vista is concerned, I see no reason to change that this point. My system is going fine, so it's not necessary. OF course, you all know that BP doesn't actually upgrade shit anyways. That could be just me not wanting to ever upgrade shit that already works.

Can I use it for porn? Cause if I can't, then I don't want anything to do with it.

Well they were talking about using it to download full length movies in a matter of seconds. I'd imagine that includes full length porn movies.

See my above comment again. I have no faith in anything that microsoft rushes to put out anymore. It seems that they're now trying to push Windows 7 and its possibilities to cover their asses on the Vista fiasco. Or I could just be wrong and they're on a bad OS / good OS pattern: Windows Me - Windows XP - Windows Vista - Windows 7.

I am not backing Apple or Linux mind you. I'm still a staunch Microsoft user/ supporter. I'm just disappointed in how Vista was handled and the fact that Microsoft is now going to start pushing an OS that's still in development rather than fixing one that is already out and filled with problems.

Back on topic though; although exciting, I doubt that this new technology will have an impact on our lives in the near future (5-10 years).

Yeah, I figure this is 10 years off from any sort of mainstream use.

...and this is how it starts...

The "Grid"/Matrix whatever....

We're all gonna be batteries.

Actually, to reiterate what Paul was saying, it's very exciting to be on the cusp of what may literally be "the future".

Finally.
I want a fucking flying car.
